Let’s Talk Anxiety & April Newsletter

Have you ever walked away from a conversation and suddenly your brain hits replay?

Like…
“Did I sound weird?”
“Why did I say that?”
“Wait… did they take that the wrong way?”

And now you’re stuck re-running the entire interaction over and over? That can have a lot to do with anxiety.

Why your brain does this (even when you don’t want it to)

Anxiety isn’t random. It’s protective. Your brain is constantly scanning for potential threats and sometimes your brain can think social interactions are threats because we are wired to care about connection, belonging, and trying to avoid rejection.

So after a conversation, your mind goes: Let's review the interaction just in case something went wrong..In psychology, this is called rumination or mentally replaying situations to try and prevent future mistakes.

Sounds helpful… but here’s the problem:

- Your brain isn’t reviewing for accuracy.
- It’s reviewing through an anxiety filter.

Which means neutral moments can suddenly feel embarrassing. Small things can feel big. And things that don't matter much at all suddenly feel like proof that you've messed everything up.

Why it keeps the anxiety cycle going

The more you replay the conversation, the more your brain starts to believe: “Something must be wrong if we’re still thinking about it”

So it digs deeper. Overanalyzes more. & Finds “evidence” that supports your fears. And this is how you get stuck in the loop.

Not because something actually went wrong…but because your brain is trying (a little too hard) to protect you.

So when this happens, here's what's next:

You don’t need to argue with your thoughts and you don’t need to figure it all out. You need to focus on regulating your nervous system first.

Try this the next time you're caught spiraling:

💭 Name what’s happening
“This is just my anxiety trying to protect me”

💭 Reality check (without spiraling)
“I don’t actually have evidence that anything went wrong”

💭 Ground your body
Take a few slow breaths.
Drop your shoulders.
Name 3 things you see around you.
Come back to right now.

Because your brain is stuck in the past, but your body can bring you back to the present.
